Work Experience at Foster Lomas

Training to become an architect is a long, intensive, and rewarding process. However, it may not be for everyone. Therefore, it is important for young people to have a meaningful introduction to what being an architect entails before committing to it. For many of us, these early experiences sparked the passion that led us into design professions. Because of this, we are eager to offer young students the same opportunity to take those first steps.

Over time, we’ve developed hypothetical project briefs that are focused enough to allow even secondary school students to produce meaningful, attractive outputs by the end of the week. Focus is crucial, as many students, full of youthful enthusiasm, would reshape the entire world if given the chance.

Instead, we want them to understand that great architecture impacts even the smallest human scales and tangible sensory interactions. At these scales, it’s easier for them to create initial proposals where the impacts of their decisions can be discussed. We can then explain the processes to solve any problems and create meaningful spaces.

We also introduce them to some of the tools architects use to develop and communicate their ideas, mostly through simple, free software that they can continue to use after they leave. However, we always emphasize that while digital tools help produce professional outputs, thinking is often quickest with just a pencil and paper.

What ties everything together is a narrative of who, what, where, and why. We make it clear that good design always responds to the location, the users, their needs, and whether the proposal fulfils those needs. Having this overarching thread makes the various tasks cohesive and leads to a clear, comprehensive project.

One of the most rewarding parts of the work experience is allowing students to present their finished work. A well-thought-out project can help even the most introverted students stand up and confidently present their ideas. Sometimes it is amazing to witness the boost this gives to their confidence. This increase in confidence and communication is vital for their future education and careers, but also for their experience during the placement. As time goes on, it can be difficult for us to recall the key questions we had at that age, so building their confidence is crucial in encouraging them to ask the important questions to determine if this career path is right for them.

We wish our students the best and hope they find as much enjoyment and meaning in their careers as we do! If we’re fortunate, we may even collaborate with them again in the future.
