About Us

Foster Lomas are an award-winning architecture and design studio. For over ten years, we have built a reputation thanks to the diversity of our team, our international project experience, our multi-disciplined design skill set and, most of all, our personable approach, openness and directness.

Originally from a craft background, Will worked for renowned blacksmith James Horrobin before completing his BA (Hons) in Interior Architecture at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff in 1996. He began his training under the tutelage of former RIBA President Michael Manser before gaining a Professional Diploma in Architecture at London Metropolitan University in 2000. He was then headhunted by World Stadium Team (Foster + Partners & HOK Sport) to work on the new Wembley Stadium before joining Patel Taylor and finally co-founding Foster Lomas in 2005.

Greg has experience in product, furniture and lighting design, but as the third generation of his family to train as an architect, the job is in his blood. Greg completed a BA (Hons) in Architecture at Brighton University before moving to London in 1995, working as a lighting designer for Speirs and Major before being recruited as a Product Designer by Habitat. After completing his Master’s Degree at London Metropolitan University in 2001, he went on to work as Project Architect at Piers Ford Architects, ACQ and finally FLACQ before co-founding Foster Lomas in 2005. Greg has taught at foundation and undergraduate levels; as a Tutor at London Metropolitan University, a Guest Critic at Oxford Brookes University and running a series of workshops on recycled materials at Brighton University.

The diversity of our backgrounds and breadth of experience allow us to offer a balance between considered design and craft skills with a portfolio of residential, commercial, arts and public projects both in the UK and internationally.

Approach

We specialise in high quality architecture and have developed our own approach that ensures each project reflects the individual client. Our systematic process – through research, inspiration, design and making, ensures we instill a unique character into each job that we undertake, rather than resorting to a house style. This has led to Foster Lomas being named as one of Wallpaper* Magazine’s 25 Most Innovative Architects in the World and being shortlisted for the Young Architect of the year Award in 2011. We enjoy producing original design solutions through the cross fertilization of ideas between different disciplines, so our design team extends beyond the studio, as we collaborate closely with a diverse group of people ranging from master craftsmen and fine artists to scientists.

Context is key in everything we do: from the emotional and practical needs of the client to exploring the local vernacular architecture and the unique qualities and materials found at the site. We strongly believe that our work should reflect and continue the story of the environment it occupies. Everyone is involved in the design process: from trainee to senior architect; from builder to craftsmen, ideas are cultivated to achieve the quality we expect. Just as importantly, we know how to talk to people, to make them feel relaxed and confident in the project, thanks to an openness and directness that is all too rare in architecture. As a key part of the development process with the client, ideas are explored through different mediums, including 3D printing, visualisations, sketches and models.

The conversation that starts off most projects is often the most important; it’s where we learn what motivates you, whether you are a private client or represent a company. We have found that clients enjoy working with us because we listen first. It’s the only way we can ensure we can develop and deliver the authentic vision you need. We pride ourselves in our relationship with our clients, our honesty and directness. We never pursue a house style, because the project is about achieving your vision. Our aim is always to exceed the brief and deliver exemplary design, combining traditional and contemporary materials and techniques with carefully considered, elegant detailing.
