Blue Lion Studio, London
2024Blue Lion Studios reimagines an outdated commercial space within a former printworks, transforming it into a flexible, low-energy workplace that balances contemporary performance with the building’s industrial heritage. The architectural approach focused on retaining and celebrating the character of the existing structure while introducing targeted interventions to improve sustainability, functionality, and long-term adaptability.
A restrained material palette and carefully integrated upgrades preserve the authenticity of the mill, allowing original features and textures to remain central to the identity of the space. The reconfigured layout maximises natural light and improves thermal efficiency, creating a more comfortable and productive working environment.
Strategic environmental interventions — including the introduction of a heat pump and MVHR system — demonstrate how considered, cost-effective measures can significantly improve the performance of existing buildings without extensive structural change. Through a sensitive approach to retrofit, the project showcases the potential of adaptive reuse to extend the life and relevance of industrial heritage buildings.
