Gallery Penthouse Apartment
2021The Gallery Penthouse offers a unique blend of residential living and curated art gallery. Foster Lomas approached this project with the client’s extensive modern art collection at its core, featuring works by artists like Picasso, Calder, and Giacometti.
Rather than a traditional home, this space was conceived as a living museum, where the collection itself dictates the design. The architecture frames views and creates dramatic reveals, allowing art to shape how the clients live. Spaces are sculpted by light, not just illuminated, making lighting an intrinsic part of the architecture. Collaborating closely with art curators Goodman Taft, we reimagined the lateral apartment, subtly reconfiguring the structure to create a balance between open, flowing spaces and intimate, enclosed rooms. The intervention was driven by crafted joinery and custom lighting, transforming the space without major structural changes.
Foster Lomas led the architectural and interior design, alongside lighting design, working with Goodman Taft, Freeman Beesley, and 800 Group. This collaborative effort resulted in a home where art, design, and architecture coexist in harmony. Intimate, hidden spaces allow for immersive daily engagement with art, while thoughtful layouts balance natural light for some pieces and dark, glowing spaces for others. This project epitomizes our ethos of creating experiences where art and architecture unite seamlessly.
“Foster Lomas have designed and delivered successfully two private homes for our art collection and we would have no hesitation in recommending them for a gallery project”
