Sartfell Visitor Centre

2018

The Sartfell Visitor Centre forms the second part of the duet to Sartfell Rural Retreat which the clients commissioned as phase one of the project. The Visitor Centre is sited in the same ground with sweeping views of the Mountains of Mourne, the Irish Sea and the Mull of Galloway in Scotland, creating a heaven for ornithologist enthusiasts. The vision for the site was to rewild the land, previously used for sheep pasture, with native woodland, meadowland and acid bogs which are home to rare species of orchids and invertebrates. The centre provides a field research facility within the Visitors Centre all layout out within one sculptural form . The building works with the gradient of the surrounding topography, sheltered by the hill’s contours, this positioning respects the viewing points of the Rural Retreat, with a full height window opening onto the Irish sea.
